How It All Began

The spark came when a friend mentioned ordering glass straws from an artist in California (who has since retired). Intrigued, Daedra brought the idea to The Glass Academy in Dearborn, Michigan, where her friend Michelle challenged her to try making them herself.

What started as a playful experiment turned into a creative spark. With The Glass Academy's guidance, Daedra learned the fundamentals of torch work (also called lampworking). At first it was just the thrill of trying something new — but soon she realized this wasn’t simply an art project. It was a solution to a problem the world hadn’t solved yet.

From Garage Workshop to Global Movement

In 2009, with a torch, some glass supplies, and a big vision, Daedra and Brian launched Strawesome out of their garage workshop in Michigan. At the time, hardly anyone was talking about reusable straws, but we believed there had to be a better way than plastic. By creating one of the first glass straw companies in the world, we helped pioneer a movement that’s now embraced worldwide.

The early days were grassroots — talking to people face-to-face, bringing straws to local events, and introducing the idea one conversation at a time. As the world began waking up to the plastic problem, Strawesome was ready with a safe, stylish, sustainable alternative.

Where We Are Today

Now, years later, Strawesome is the longest-running dedicated glass straw maker in the world. Every straw is handcrafted in our family workshop in Michigan — properly annealed for strength, inspected for quality, and made with care from start to finish.
