It’s My Birthday!

I’m not one to ode to myself but today I turn 35 and a friend recently told me something that made me think a little differently about life….

She told me that it’s believed that a woman is at her best when she is in her mid-thirties.  It struck me that I don’t want to look back one day and think that I didn’t live my life to fullest during the best time of my life.  I decided to live my life with no regrets and to do what is best for me.  But, I also understand that if something doesn’t go the way I wanted or planned it doesn’t mean it’s the end of my world, I still have it pretty darn good.  In my opinion, too many American’s complain that their life is so hard when in reality it’s fantastic in comparison to someone living in a third world country.

Everyday I have something that another woman somewhere else in the world would love to have. It’s simple: clean water, a nice house to live in, a safe neighborhood to raise my children in, freedom to be a woman in society and have my own business, etc.  I may not have the fanciest car or get to buy designer shoes and handbags as a weekend activity but I’m ok with that. I’m perfectly happy with my life and will continue to accept what life throws at me with grace – the good, the bad and the ugly.

Happy Birthday to me! But it’s also a Happy Birthday to you because one lucky reader is going to receive a decorative glass straw designed especially by me to celebrate today!  Leave a comment below (one per person please) telling me something you’re going to do differently this year. I’ll randomly choose a winner on Thursday, March 1, 2012.

  5. Happy Birthday!!! I told myself at the beginning of this year that I would start telling the people around me how much I love them. I know it might sound silly but we don’t tell eachother too much in my family. They mean so much and do so much for me so I want them to know how much they mean to me. Meaningful words and small acts of kindness are on the to-do list for this year!

I hope you have a fabulous day 🙂

  7. This year i’m going to start doing the thing i love, being crafty! Ive been wanting to do decorative/ crafty things for years and every now and then I do something little, but usually talk myself out of it because i have too many other ‘grown up’ things to do. This year i’m going to make time for myself.

  11. AMEN! This year I am going to be patient with myself and others. I am going to take care of myself and stop wishing for all the things that “could’ve been” I am going to “break the old records” that are repeating negative unpleasant statements in my heart and I am going to replace them with the truth and with positive statements to counter them.
This year I am going to be all that i can be and as it so depends on ME!
PS Thanks for making me write this down! It’s been rolling around and needing a place to land for a few weeks now! (i’m printing myself a copy)

  12. This year I started a pinterest board titled 52 Projects. I just know that I do so much more in a year than what I can remember at the end of each year, so this year I will be posting an image of something I have done/accomplished for each week. Just my way of reflecting on the year and keeping track of it. So far I have several books that I have read and a few challenges that I have been wanting to do and DID! http://pinterest.com/jps75/52-projects-in-2012/

  13. Happy birthday, Daedra!
Something I am attempting to do differently this year is be a more positive person, kind of along the lines of what you were saying, and try not to judge people so quickly. I have noticed myself making snap judgments about people and that is not a quality I want to have, so I am consciously trying to make that change.
I hope you have a wonderful day!

My father had a small chance to meet my son(at the time we did not know boy or girl) via a 4D ultrasound, but my son will never know his granddad. So i am trying to make sure he gets to know him even though he is not here with us. 🙂

    Happy Birthday!!!

  20. Well i am a 47 year old disabled grandmother of a 3 year old. I have more less been a recluse in my house since my accident in 2010. I realized 2 weeks ago when my grandson looked at me and said Nana your fat, it dawned on me when i looked at myself in the mirror that i am obese. My grandson said Nana i love you. That woke me up so this year i plan on getting out of my shell a little more and walking as much as i can handle so i can get healthy enough so i will be around to watch that adorable grandson of mine grow up, graduate, and maybe someday have a family of his own. Life is to precious to let slip by and not be a part of it.

  26. I have been told since my early teens that i could never have children due to ovarian issues. My husband and i started to take better care of ourself and did a complete turnaround in our diet in order to just be healthier. last year 2 weeks asfter talking with a fertitily dr with not much hope to go on, i went to the dr for the flue to find out I was pregnant with my miracle child. This was such a true blessing. On top of our decision to take better care health wise we have also decided that we were slowly going to become more earth concious. We are now cloth diapering and have been full time for the past 6 months. We have switched to Glass straws, “thanks to an amazing woman whose birthday is today and makes beautiful functionable pieces of art.” Not only for us but now for my son. And soon for my daughter or miracle number 2 who is due in 3 more months. We use cloth wipes, washable bpa free lunch containers, bring our own cloth bags to stores and have also recently started to compost in our yard. It seems that the better we take care of ourselfs and our surroundings the blessings that have come our way have seemed to be boundless. It could be coincidence. I like to think of it as something much much more and this year and every year until the end my goal will be to pass that along to my children. Who could ask for anything more.

  28. I’m going to take more time for me because I can’t be the best mom to my kids if I’m not a very good me. My kids are 5 years and 14 months old. Since the first one was born, I’ve focused on them and not often on myself. I now realize that I need to spend time without them to maintain my sanity and sense of self. I used to be timid about asking for time to spend getting my nails or hair done, shopping (without kids), or attending an event. Now I demand that time. I realize how much time I spend watching the kids by myself and getting up with them on the weekends instead of sleeping in, and I want my fair share of it, too. Thankfully, my husband is a great guy and he doesn’t have any problem with me getting this time to myself.

  29. This year, I’m worrying less about what friends might think of my messy, lived-in house. After talking with some of my other mom friends, I realized that we all do the same ‘quick clean it up!’ if we have someone stopping by, but most of the time, we have the same piles of laundry in the corner, toys scattered on the floor, and dishes not yet loaded into the washer. No, my house isn’t spotless, but that’s because I’m playing with my boys, or working, or going to school, or squeezing in some quality time with my hubby. My life is full, and sometimes that means that the laundry hamper is too! 🙂

  31. Happy Birthday! Ever since my second child was born (20 mths ago) I have felt completely overwhelmed. I know I’m partially at fault for taking on too much or not keeping up with certain things but I’m hoping to maintain some sense of sanity this year so I don’t feel like I’m about to have a break down every other day! So far so good, although I’m nervous about what will happen once Spring gets here and schedules pick up!

  43. This is perfect! Starting yesterday we began working towards a raw diet. The plan is to be eating completely raw with a lot of juicing going on by mid-April, so we’re transitioning during the next month and a half! This is an incredibly important goal for me as I struggle with hashimoto’s. While there isn’t a “cure” there seems to be an unconfirmed link between it and diet. It’s a huge goal, one that’s been talked about for YEARS, but this year we’re doing it! No better way to drink up all the juice we make than with a glass straw!

  44. Happy Birthday!! I, too, have been trying to enjoy and be content (even truly joyful!) with all I have. It’s been my goal to teach my children that people are more important than things and that time is precious. I want so much for them to learn to spend their time on things that actually matter, but find myself needing the reminding as much or more than they do. How easy it is to forget what all we are blessed with!

This year I plan to divide my time better so no one feels left out–including myself. I’ve already read 5 books this year and I haven’t really read at all in the last few years (except kids books at bedtime). Now that I’m reading again, I’m not really interested in TV and don’t feel like I’m wasting time. Yeah for 2012!!
